With yet another weekend of busy backcountry parking areas amid COVID-19, the Colorado Department of Transportation has started to close off parking lots. These closures consist of areas of heavy usage including Loveland Pass backcountry ski access and popular hiking and biking trailheads on the front range. Although right now may seem like a great time to go backcountry skiing, it is not. Crowding in busy parking lots can encourage the spread of the virus and high-risk activities can put Search and Rescue and Health Care Facilities at risk. Outdoor recreation is still encouraged, but it is more important than ever to recreate close to home and in sparsely crowded areas.
