Jim Creek Trail Restoration
August 14, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
HTA is partnering with the Boettcher Scholarship Foundation and the US Forest Service to restore trail surface and widen the trail corridor on Jim Creek Trail after last summer’s massive wind events. This project will be ongoing throughout the summer, but this volunteer effort will be a one-day event. The bulk of the project will occur between 1.5 and 2 miles in from the trailhead on Waterboard Road 128 outside of Winter Park. The microburst wind event last September nearly leveled the entire old-growth forest surrounding Jim Creek Trail and made the trail completely impassable with downed trees. Although the trail corridor has already been cleared, this project will focus on restoring the trail surface in areas where root balls uprooted the ground or where sections of trail were lost. We will also be working to cut back and clear the corridor in areas where it is still restricted. This project will provide much-needed safety improvements to one of the most popular hiking routes in Grand County. We are in need of additional volunteers on this date and various other days throughout the summer to help restore tread and move debris from the trail corridor.
