Whether you are getting outdoors for a short day trip or a longer backcountry venture, it is important to always be prepared. Incidents and changes in plans can happen at any time.
Here is a list of 10 recommended essentials and are some ways to be prepared for your next outing.
- Navigation-Trail apps are a good resource, but remember to always have a secondary source in case of technology fails. (map, compass etc.)
- Sun Protection-Sun protection is particularly important in Colorado with higher elevation and an increase in sun exposure
- Insulation-It is always a good idea to have extra layers of clothing for sun/rain and other changing weather conditions. Often weather is very different at a trailhead than at the trail summit.
- Illumination-Headlamps or flashlights with extra batteries are recommended to have even when not planning on being out past dark.
- First-Aid Supplies-Always be prepared for emergencies by packing first aid supplies. Keep up to date with inventory and expiration dates.
- Fire Source-It is a good idea to have at least 2 types of fire sources (matches, lighter, flint, etc.) in case of emergency. Familiarize yourself with fire regulations before heading out.
- Tools/Repair Kits- Carry basic repair kits and multitools specific to your outing needs.
- Nutrition- Specific food items are a given to bring on your trip. Always be prepared for the possibility of changes in your trip plans and an increase of hunger due to higher energy outpug. . It is recommended to pack an extra day's worth of food supply to keep energy high.
- Hydration-Staying hydrated on your trip is of utmost importance. As your physical activity increases, so does your risk of dehydration. Your body needs more water the higher in elevation you travel. Be prepared with extra water or a water filtration tool. Identify water sources on your trip before heading out.
- Emergency Shelter-Shelter is one of the most important elements during an emergency survival situation. A tent, tarp, emergency space blanket or bivy sack are good options for an emergency shelter.
